The Malvern Hansom Cabs

were similar to the one shown

above, which operated in the

centre of Melbourne.

The horse-drawn cabs were eventually replaced by a motor bus service.

This small vehicle (right) was operated by Staunton's Bus Service for many years. The photo was taken in 1929.

The route was along Station Street, Dandenong Road, and Tooronga Road to Tooronga Railway Station.

The bus seems to have been built on a car chassis.

Even until the late 1950s the buses which operated the run were still much smaller than the usual suburban buses.

Left: Children in a Malvern Street playing with their truck (billy cart ),similar to ones Vincent Wickenton made. Note the gas street lamp on a cast iron stand at the right of the photo.

The local streets were safe to play on as there were very few cars at this time.

The cart is carrying two boys and two girls, Alfred and Alice Williams , and their friends Jack Cooper and Madge Wopler. The photo was taken in 1912 when Alfred was about 11 and Alice about 7 years old.

Above left: The junction of Station Street and Claremont Avenue. Again a street gas lamp is prominent. Photo taken about 1910.

The Estate Agent's building at the right is opposite the entrance to Malvern Railway Station.

Hansom Cabs and four-wheel horse-drawn cabs lined up on Station Street just to the right of the building offering local transport for train passengers.

Left , under the 1910 photo: Apart from the removal of the gas light and some shop verandahs and the addition of power lines, the view is little changed today.
