Slates and slate pencils were used in the early years.

It was only when students graduated to the "Big School" that they used paper and ink  in exercise and copy books.

A  photographer travelled between schools to take class photos. He arrived at Vincent's school in a carriage similar to this one at right.

The photo was taken about

1915.

At Monday morning assemblies students at Tooronga Road School, in line with all Victorian State schools, stood to attention facing the flag, saluted the flag and recited the Oath : " I love God and my country, I will serve the King, I will honour the Flag and cheerfully obey my parents, teachers and the laws of the land".

One day of each week, Vincent and other boys travelled from the Tooronga Road school

to the Armadale State School

for Sloyd classes.

The classroom scene would

have been similar to the photo (left) showing a Sloyd class at Brunswick State School in 1915. Sloyd was a special technique

for teaching woodwork.

Note the boys are wearing aprons.
